RELISH THE REMNANTS OF NATURE

Old Miakka Preserve contains rare remnants of longleaf pine forest and Florida scrub. Join an environmental specialist on a walk through these habitats learning about the natural communities and the management methods used to restore and maintain them. If conditions are right, the trail edges may be dotted with fall wildflowers to admire including Florida paintbrush and blazing stars. Some of the trails may be wet, please wear appropriate shoes.

DONA BAY PADDLE TO POCONO PRESERVE

Take a short paddle trip into Dona Bay and along the mangrove and coastal hammock communities of Pocono Preserve learning about the estuary system and importance of coastal creeks in Sarasota County. Attendees must bring their own kayak and required safety equipment (PFD, whistle).

LEMON BAY F.I.S.H. PROJECT

Calling all F.I.S.H. (Folks Interested in Submerged Habitats). Join American Littoral Society biologist Chuck Idelberger on a search for marine life in Lemon Bay. Using hand and seine nets, you will search shallow waters and seagrass beds, observing, collecting and discussing some of the many interesting fishes and other animals that inhabit Lemon Bay. RESTORATION OF NATIVE COASTAL ECOSYSTEMS

Join a Sarasota County Environmental Specialist on a hike along the trails of Curry Creek Preserve to learn about habitat restoration including invasive plant management in natural area parks of Sarasota County. A portion of this walk may go off trails through areas of the preserve along Curry Creek with a focus on the floodplain marsh communities. Participants should bring drinking water, closed toe shoes and be comfortable walking on uneven surfaces.

A PRESCRIPTION FOR FIRE

Fire is a natural part of the Florida ecosystem. In order to prevent larger wildfires and to promote the health of the forest, prescribed fires are an essential tool for land managers. Join Park Naturalist and certified wildland firefighter Sean McGrail on a walk through Lemon Bay Park to discuss the role of prescribed fire, the requirements to perform them, and techniques used to ensure the safety of the surrounding areas. Please be ready for a 1.5-mile walk through potentially uneven terrain and bring any necessary sunscreen and water.
